Thinset mortars are one of the major components for installing tile floors. Builders, contractors, and homeowners often use them because of their durability, and the fact that they can handle a good chunk of weight. They are very versatile, and as such they can be employed in areas exposed to high levels of heat, as well as wetness.

When it comes to mixing thinset, the process is straightforward and easy to follow. Thinset is often purchased in powder form, and mixed with water. On the other hand, there are some that are mixed with acrylic additives. Therefore, it is important you follow our installation guide below.

Materials for mixing

The following are materials you would need or the mixing.

  • Respirator
  • Water or acrylic additive
  • Thinset Mortar
  • Margin Towel
  • Large Bucket
  • 1/2 inch drill with mortar-mixing paddle

The best way to mix Thinset Mortar

  • The first step is to put on your respirator and pour the water into the large bucket. Remember to pour the water first, and not the powder so as to minimize dust. Remember, your respirator should be on, to prevent any inhalation of dust particles.
  • Next is to pour the recommended amount of powder for the job. Start mixing using the margin trowel. Ensure you properly mix the powder and water.
  • Continue mixing with your margin trowel. For better mixing, you can employ a 1/2 inch drill with mortar-mixing paddle. The recommended way to use the drill is at low speed. This will help any trapped hair escape, and increase the bond o the mixture.
  • Continue mixing your thinset mortar and water until they achieve thick texture. You can add more powder or water where necessary. The important thing is to achieve a consistent texture across board. You can stop mixing when your mortar doesn't drip of your trowel.
  • Before you use the mortar allow it to slake by letting it sit for at least 10 minutes. Slaking allows the additives to activate within the mixture. In addition, it also allows the powder to absorb moisture. As soon as the time is exceeded, stir it one more time, and you are good to go
Use the above methods to mix your thinset mortar correctly. Remember to wear your respirator during the mixing process to guard against any dust inhalation. Mixing thinset mortar is easy if you follow the right steps.
