1. Professional installation is the key to long-term performance and your satisfaction with any flooring product. The number one cause of consumer dissatisfaction with flooring performance and appearance is poor installation.
2. Manufacturers can not guarantee that flooring sold over the internet is 1st quality. And, manufacturers will not support warranties on products that are not 1st quality; so you may end up purchasing a product that is not covered by the manufacturer. Prices that seem “too good to be true” – likely are.
3. Flooring is not a commodity item, and shopping by price alone will almost always be painful in the end. If you’re going to have people come in to your home to do work, you should want to be confident that they will be pleasant and competent. The alternative will most certainly be unpleasant.
A business associate of mine just had marble floors installed by another company through the plumbing company that was redesigning their kitchen. The marble color from crate to crate was not consistent and the installers did not try to blend and separate the light and dark colors, so there are large patches of dark tiles in some rooms. They also installed numerous chipped marble tiles and were not pleasant about removing and changing them. They also completely botched transitions at doorways and to other flooring materials. The installation company didn’t clean the marble properly. Then they told the customer that they didn’t need to seal the marble!
Yikes! Everybody knows you must seal marble and stone. I suggested that they talk to the actual installation company about cleaning and sealing the stone – they said they couldn’t wait for that company to leave and didn’t want them back. We are going to take care of the sealing for him because he’s an associate, and only because of that. What a pity, though; a bad experience that shouldn’t have happened!
