Not so long ago, the only decent quality area rugs were those that were handmade - and specifically: Hand Knotted.
In fact, handknotted rugs were the only types of rugs, or carpet that we sold back then. The machine loomed area rugs were chintsy and fake looking (not to mention still fairly expensive). There were some "hand-hooked" area rugs coming out of China, but even they were shoddy compared to the hand-knotted rugs.
Recently, there have been some very major improvements in color and styling of machine loomed area rugs that make incredible sense!
What do I mean? Well, decorating styles change more often these days. Our parents and grandparents would buy furniture and furnishings, and live in 1 home for decades. Remember Grandma's old oriental rug? It's still has great value - but only works in "some" decor schemes. These days, we move to a new home every 7 - 12 years, and we like to "freshen" up the atmosphere by redecorating more frequently.
Buying a $2,000 (or more) hand-knotted wool area rug is nice - but what do you do with it when you want to redecorate? It's not a very saleable item...
Now, you can buy a very current-style area rug for less than $500 (and many for considerably less) without having it look chintsy. See some of the new styles and designs (with prices) that are available. It's only a fraction of what is actually available in the industry - but some of the product I happen to like for either PRICE, or DESIGN.
